Have you heard? ETC is hosting a community happy hour on September 14, sponsored by Harpoon Medical! We spoke to the Harpoon Medical’s Megan Cortez to learn more about what the company does. Be sure to read on, and RSVP to attend here!
ETC: What does Harpoon Medical do?
Harpoon Medical: Harpoon Medical Inc. is a clinical stage medical device company that focuses in minimally invasive mitral valve repair. Our device was created by Dr. James Gammie, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at University of Maryland Medical Center, in hopes to revolutionize the current cardiac procedure. With our device, surgeons are able to access the mitral valve on a beating heart through a small incision in the ribs without the need to crack the chest or stop the heart.
ETC: What have been some recent big milestones for the company?
HM: Harpoon received a large investment from Edwards Lifesciences who has an option to purchase the company in the future. Additionally, Harpoon published the early results of the company’s Early Feasibility Study, and submitted its CE Mark Dossier to BSI and expects to receive CE Mark before the end of the year.
ETC: Where is Harpoon Medical located, and why do you like being in Baltimore?
HM: Harpoon Medical is located in Camden Yards Warehouse, formerly known as the B&O Warehouse. The best part of working in Baltimore, other than being in close proximity to both Orioles and Ravens stadium, is the sense of community that this city has to offer. Over the last two years, Charm City has given Harpoon Medical a home to hang its hat on and has opened doors of opportunity to establish, connect, grow and flourish!
ETC: Do you have any advice for startups that are in the earlier stage?
HM: The greatest asset to any company is its team. Find quality and motivated individuals that will work hard and cohesively towards the company’s vision. Have a mission statement so that your employees always have reference to what they are working towards.
ETC: What’s your favorite motivational quote?
HM: There are two:
